Autumn in Quebec: how to choose the right accessory for your day.
Aug 26, 2026
You know you live in Quebec when, come autumn, you have to look at how people are dressed outside to know whether it's a day for a scarf, a light toque, or a sweater. Or even a day for a light sweater or a raincoat. (Those who get it will understand 😉)
We all know it: it's chilly in the morning, and in the afternoon, you almost wish you had your swimsuit handy to take advantage of the first body of water you see. So, how do you dress for a day when the temperature seems to have decided to do its own thing?
For me, the answer isn't just in the weather. It's also in what you have planned.
Since summer is so short, most of us tend to deny how chilly the air is by September/October. Add to that the question of how to dress for the day when the temperatures fluctuate so much? Personally, I absolutely don't want to leave with a coat in the morning (even if I can tolerate it for the first few hours), because I know I'll have to carry it all day, as the midday sun makes it far too hot to wear. At that point, I prefer accessories like a scarf, a toque, or a light sweater. However, the problem with "classic" accessories is that they're all or nothing. That is, either very warm for winter or very light for summer, but none of them are suitable for all temperatures at the same time.
I have a solution for you! Did you know that bamboo breathes and is a bit like a chameleon? It doesn't change color, but rather that bamboo is a breathable material that can be comfortable in both mild weather and when the temperature drops. Indeed, a bamboo toque, in addition to being multifunctional, is made of bamboo. With its opening at the top, it allows you ladies to pull out your duvet. If it's warmer, you can wear it as a headband. Feeling a chill around your neck? It can also be worn as a neck warmer. This makes it a great ally for summer! For winter, it's perfect for sports enthusiasts like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or downhill skiing. I even love it for going to the spa!! And what about the in-between seasons, like autumn: it's perfect! Even more so for those who enjoy walking, cycling, or hiking in the mountains…
The real deciding factor for whether it's right for you is whether you're active or sedentary. Even though the toque is a four-season accessory, it might not be the ideal choice for you in winter if you're mostly sedentary and your only outings in the cold consist of waiting for the bus or going to work. Nevertheless, it can still be useful during the other three seasons of the year.
So, on this cooler September morning, what will you do today? Cycle to work? Besides keeping your ears warm, a toque will save your hairstyle for the morning meeting. Or, it can protect your throat (if you wear it as a neck warmer) from the cool wind. That'll prevent that tickly feeling in the back of your throat. Next time you're unsure what to wear, ask yourself: what's on the schedule today?
