Do I really need all this? What if versatility were the answer?
Oct 01, 2026
Have you noticed how incredibly easy it is these days to buy whatever we want, whenever we want, with just a few taps on our phones? We no longer have that moment of pause—that period of anticipation and excitement—like we used to! This raises another question: do I really need all this stuff?
Be honest: how many items in your wardrobe have you never even worn? Some might even still have the store tags attached, right? Do you have boxes in the basement for storing summer clothes and swapping them out seasonally?
Don’t you think that’s a lot of stuff to manage in our already busy lives?
What if we turned to versatile items that can meet several of our daily needs? After all, "versatile" certainly doesn't mean boring, minimalist, or complicated. Above all, versatility allows us to do more with less.
Let’s be clear: we don’t buy a product just because it’s marketed as multifunctional. It’s about meeting actual, everyday needs. A multifunctional item is only truly valuable if we actually use those different functions. Ultimately, having an accessory that serves multiple purposes saves us from buying a different item for every single situation. We learn to make better use of what we already own.
Among the many situations where versatility shines, there is one where it becomes especially valuable: traveling. Since suitcase space is limited, we have to choose carefully what we pack. That’s where a multifunctional scarf becomes a fantastic option. At the airport, it keeps my passport, boarding passes, and credit card within easy reach. On the plane (and in restaurants during the trip)—where the air conditioning is always blasting—I can drape the scarf over my shoulders like a light jacket or wrap it around my neck to stay warm. And there are so many other examples I could share.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself before buying an accessory (even one labeled as "versatile"):
- Will I really use it in different ways?
- Can I use it across different seasons?
- Do I already own items at home that serve the same purpose?
- Will its versatility actually be useful to me, or is it just a marketing ploy?
In my case, here is how I actually use my 5-in-1 scarf:
1- Around the neck, with the pocket open: When I want a splash of color to brighten my day.
2- Around the neck, with the pocket closed: When traveling and I want to keep my essentials close at hand without carrying a bag.
3- As a bolero: When I’m at a restaurant and feel cold due to the air conditioning.
4- As a crossbody bag: When walking outside in the summer heat.
5- As a hood: To protect myself from the scorching sun while strolling through the city, or from the wind and cold in winter.
Personally, I find it very useful when I’m at a restaurant and feel chilly; I simply drape it over my shoulders. In conclusion, before buying this new item, you should ask yourself: "Do I already have something that meets this need?" Do you agree with me that a responsible wardrobe isn't the one with the fewest clothes and accessories, but rather the one where the items inside are actually used?
